Apple is finally bringing its Apple Intelligence suite to China, starting with a beta version of iOS 27.3 that will roll out next week. The company announced on its Chinese newsroom website that the beta will launch on November 4, with a full public release scheduled for December. This marks a significant expansion for Apple's AI strategy, opening the door to one of the world's largest smartphone markets.

Apple Intelligence features coming to China

The initial rollout does not include the redesigned Siri that Apple has been developing. Instead, Chinese users will get several earlier Apple Intelligence tools, including notification summaries, real-time translation, rewriting and proofreading assistance, visual intelligence, and the ability to remove objects from photos. These features are designed to work across Apple's ecosystem, enhancing productivity and convenience for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users.

Apple has also partnered with Alibaba to integrate its Qwen chatbot into some experiences. This is similar to the ChatGPT integration that Apple introduced in its 2024 iOS updates, but tailored for the Chinese market where many Western AI services are blocked or restricted.

Regulatory approval and local AI development

Apple Intelligence received approval from Chinese regulators in July, signaling that the launch was imminent. According to Reuters, Apple trained its own large language model specifically for China, a move that likely addresses local data privacy and content moderation requirements. This custom model is expected to handle Chinese language inputs more effectively and comply with the country's strict AI regulations.

The partnership with Alibaba is also notable, as it gives Apple access to a major local tech player with deep experience in AI and cloud infrastructure. Qwen, Alibaba's AI model, is already widely used in China, making it a natural fit for Apple's services.

What this means for Apple's global AI push

China is a crucial market for Apple, and the delayed launch of Apple Intelligence there has been a competitive disadvantage compared to local rivals like Huawei and Xiaomi, which have already integrated advanced AI features into their devices. By bringing these tools to China, Apple aims to retain its user base and attract new customers who value AI-powered assistance.

The phased approach—starting with a beta and focusing on specific features rather than the full suite—suggests Apple is being cautious about performance and regulatory compliance. The company is likely to expand the feature set over time, as it has done in other regions.

For now, Chinese users will need to wait until December for the stable release, but the beta will give developers and early adopters a chance to test the new capabilities. Apple's move also sets the stage for deeper AI integration in future iOS versions, potentially including the more advanced Siri once it is ready for the Chinese market.
